I remember my first mobile phone. How excited I was about receiving an SMS for the first time, and how devastated I was when I realised how expensive it was — with only a limited number of characters available to ask questions, state facts, and be friendly, all in one. My first phone still had an aerial. I was so relieved when it broke off and my phone at least looked more like those around me. When those "special" messages got sent, I only received random question marks and brackets. I had to put my SIM in a friend's phone to also witness a cute teddy bear hugging a rainbow. Those were the days. Now most people would sooner lose an arm than their mobile phone, and connecting to the Wi-Fi seldom requires a password. We have multiple devices managing our fridges, TVs, even our mattresses and daily dose of vitamins. Joking. Not joking. We have become so used to always being "on" — receiving and reacting to notifications. Yet when the doorbell rings, we are reluctant to get up and give our time, our energy, our focus to someone standing at the door. There is no difference between a doorbell constantly ringing and notifications constantly clamouring for attention. Our challenge on the podcast this week is simple: can you mute your "doorbells"? Or at least take the batteries out. Where focus goes, energy flows. Our wish for you is to focus on what makes you truly happy and fulfilled, and to be reminded of your value. Every day.
