Ding dong...again...

You know the feeling when telling a story and someone is forever interrupting.

Or watching a TV show and the adverts keep popping up.

Or a neighbour wants to have a cup of tea right as you are putting the finishing touches on dinner.

We do — we hate interruptions.

Or so we tell others.

But watch yourself with your phone on the desk, and you will often catch yourself interrupted multiple times an hour. By a ding-dong-notification that often sounds more like a fire alarm than a gentle nudge to wish someone a happy birthday.

At some stage it became cool to have the noisiest, most disruptive notification tones, almost as a way to tell everyone in the room and nearby neighbourhood that someone, somewhere, wants us to be their proverbial knight in shining armour.

However, when we get off that little high horse we have no idea what we were actually trying to do before the disruption, and we have to start at square one. Again.

This is me, reminding you, that notifications can be gentle. Soft. That time blocking is a thing used by many very successful people — using a structured time frame to answer emails, check social, research the newest Shetland pony you may want to adopt or send as a gift.

For the person who already knows that a message can wait.

For the person who never intended to interrupt you.

Here's to you, choosing to not interrupt yourself in your story of life.
