A Little Reminder: You Don’t Need to Finish, Just Start

Let’s be honest – and we are all about honesty, aren’t we. When you look out of the window, there’s probably an outdoor project that has been nagging at you for ages. Or perhaps, when you glance at the kitchen, the laundry, or your wardrobe, you can spot a handful of little (and not‑so‑little) tasks you’ve either not started or still haven’t finished.

Why does this happen to us? Why do we allow these things to take up so much headspace and “bandwidth”? Why can’t we simply be better?

Overwhelm.

We often look at projects, tasks, phone calls, emails, proposals – and imagine tackling them in one clean sweep: start, work, complete. But more often than not, we don’t complete them at all, and we end up right back where we started.

Mel Robbins talks about the “Hot 15”. When she opens her eyes in the morning, she doesn’t reach for her phone or dive into her inbox. Instead, she spends the first 15 minutes mentally working on one of those lingering projects that has been weighing on her mind.

The mission isn’t to finish it. The mission is simply to make progress. Even a few minutes can make a dent in the scale of what needs to be done. Sometimes it’s as simple as writing a to‑do list for tomorrow, or noting what wasn’t finalised today but has already been started.

Progress beats perfection. Every time.
