While I was editing this week's episode, a guest interview with Melissa Rodway, I started thinking about the word: Adventure. We all grow up with adventure stories – whether an Enid Blyton classic of kids on an island, a bunch of pizza-loving heroes in a half-shell, or a trip around the world where a camera crew is following your every move. Adventure, the things we think about as adrenaline inducing. A place with food we've only heard of or people we don't really understand. But I thought about the word and realised that not all adventure has to be dramatic. The dictionary meaning of the word venture – simply drop the 'ad' and you get 'venture' – may lead you to try something completely different for a change. A stroll through your local neighbourhood, maybe saying hi to someone standing outside their house. Enrolling for the free course advertised online, the one about the thing you have always wanted to learn to do. Saying yes to a colleague who asks to join you for a cup of coffee. An extra, meaningful, polite sentence at the end of a hasty reply-mail. Adventure can be anywhere, and everywhere. The places we go to, the far-far aways, the other side of the rainbows…people live there. Our own back yard is often the dream destination of someone on the other side of the planet. In our chat, Melissa and I explored the idea of how we go to see places, eat the food, and do the things. But that real meaning and purpose is found when we stop, and chat to the person on the other end. I asked her for a paragraph for this letter, and I hope you get a chance to listen to our conversation. We hope you'll be inspired to seek adventure in places you've never thought of exploring before. Melissa Rodway is a Canadian writer, traveler, and observer of human nature.
